FAQ's

FAQ’s for new Starters

Here is some information for anyone thinking of starting Training in Martial arts.

First of all do not worry! Every one in the room has been a new student at some time even the instructors.

1. Will I be fit enough to do Karate?
You will not be expected to be able to do 100’s of press ups or sit ups. The exercises will be tailored to your fitness level and ability and the instructor will gauge your abilities through each class session. You should find that as each session ends, you will feel fitter in body and mind and you will see a gradual improvement after each session.

2. Am I too old to start Karate?
Whatever your age there are benefits to martial arts training with improved fitness and flexibility. Our class ages range from 5 years through to 55 years of age and exercises and drills are tailored to suit you. If you do have any doubts before starting we would recommend you seeing a Doctor first for your own piece of mind.

3. I will not know anyone else?
An added benefit we have found with the classes is the social side and the majority of students have found new friends and a fun and friendly approach from existing students when you enter the club. Many social events are organised outside of the Dojo training sessions.

4. I am not flexible enough to do those kicks.
During the warm up at the start of the lesson you will be stretching different muscle groups and slowly building up your flexibility as above you will notice small changes and before you know it you will be touching those toes.

Greater flexibility can make you stronger and faster,
Making a small commitment of 15 minutes daily will greatly improve your flexibility and health.

5. I will never achieve black belt.
While it is true reaching black belt takes commitment and time and is a major achievement. This should not be your only focus we hold grading’s approximately every three months and each one is an achievement within it’s self and a step towards a better understanding of karate and that black belt.

6. Do I have to fight anyone?
First of all do not confuse class sparing with getting in the ring with Lennox Lewis sparring is not about hitting or getting hit it’s about movement and control.

Kumite (sparring) is part of learning Karate. This may seem daunting but remember you will have learned the movements and techniques involved before you are expected to spar. Sparring is very disciplined and requires high levels of concentration and physical control which you learn throughout your grading process.

7. How much will it cost to train?
Our costs are straight forward, the first two lessons are free then we charge weekly £5 for your first lesson £2:50 for you next lesson and no charge for a third lesson in the same week. So you could train four times a week for £7:50. If you do not train you do not pay.

The only other immediate cost is a yearly licence fee of £15 Juniors and £17 Adults after the first two free week sessions have been completed.

We do not ask for payments up front or by direct debit, if however you wish to pay monthly please speak to one of our instructors.

8. What should I wear?
Until you take your first grading with Ki-Rin all you need to train is some tracksuit or jogging bottoms and a tee shirt. You will work with bare feet so you will not need trainers or pumps. You will be expected to get a Gi (Karate Suit) before your first grading. Please also bring a drink with you.
